Motherhood as Muse examines maternal identity as a source of artistic creation, with artists pulling from their own lived realities to explore the tensions of the maternal experience. Curators Kathryn Geismar and Deborah Peeples aim to redefine “the concept of the muse through the gaze of motherhood,” exploring motherhood as a transformative experience that is both deeply personal and universal. The exhibition includes painting, sculpture, photography, and multi-media installation, all engaging with the multifaceted state of becoming that is motherhood.

Both are woven through Thoreau’s work as a naturalist and his philosophical thought and ethical commitments. The orchestra performs music by Michael Torke, Samuel Barber, and Margaret Bonds.  Michael Torke’s Javelin was commissioned by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra for its 50th anniversary and performed at the opening ceremony of the Atlanta Summer Olympics in 1996.  Samuel Barber’s lyrical Symphony No. 1 combines the four movements of a classical symphony into a single movement.  Margaret Bond’s Montgomery Variations was composed in 1964 and dedicated to Martin Luther King Jr.  It portrays the early history of the Civil Rights Movement, in particular the Montgomery Bus Boycott and its aftermath.
