Event Description

Artisans Way, located at 18 Walden St., Concord, will welcome local pyrography artist Alissa O’Brien on Sunday, November 2, from 1-4 pm. She will be in the gallery to demonstrate her wood-burning technique and discuss her inspirations and her mission. Alissa O’Brien decided to rekindle her dream of becoming an artist by enrolling in the Natural Science Illustration program at Rhode Island School of Design. She worked landscape jobs to pay for her classes and started collecting wood. She found beauty, artistry, and a unique medium hidden underneath the bark and imagined scenes of nature emerging from the wood grain. Alissa learned wood burning (pyrography) to create art that was calling out to her to be revealed. To her, the wood burning tool became an instrument of a Phoenix, where the ordinary is transformed into something extraordinary, with fire. As an artist, Alissa strives to bring attention to simple events in nature that are frequently overlooked or ignored. It is her mission to provide art that creates an awareness of the importance of the natural world. She creates art as a reminder to detach from the pressing concerns of modern living; to reconnect with, experience, value, and celebrate the balance nature provides. Discover the Battle Road

“The flames of sedition spread.” So wrote General Thomas Gage in September 1774 after armed colonists forced the closure of the county courts in Springfield and Great Barrington. The crisis was escalating—and revolution was drawing near. Discover the story in “The Massachusetts Court Closures: The Flames of Sedition Spread.” And when spring arrives, why not see the history for yourself? “Lexington’s Historic Landmarks: Tracing the Roots of the Revolution” highlights nine sites in Lexington that bring the opening chapters of the Revolution to life.
