Transformed by Revolution

While Concord’s role in the start of the American Revolution is widely recognized, less well known are the continued experiences of disruption and turmoil in Concord throughout the war. Through eyewitness historical objects, artworks, and documents, Transformed by Revolution explores what it was like to be part of this war-time community that hosted Harvard College and became a hub of military supplies for the army in Boston. The exhibition also considers who participated in this fight for Independence and the meanings of freedom for women, the Black community, and sovereign Indigenous nations.

Motherhood as Muse Exhibition and Curators' Tour

Motherhood as Muse examines maternal identity as a source of artistic creation, with artists pulling from their own lived realities to explore the tensions of the maternal experience. Curators Kathryn Geismar and Deborah Peeples aim to redefine “the concept of the muse through the gaze of motherhood,” exploring motherhood as a transformative experience that is both deeply personal and universal. The exhibition includes painting, sculpture, photography, and multi-media installation, all engaging with the multifaceted state of becoming that is motherhood.

Musical Storytelling with Schumann Family Concert

“They belong only to us” was Clara Schumann’s response upon first listening to Robert Schumann’s Kindersezen, “Scenes from Childhood”, alluding to the tenderness of childhood remembrances and music as a shared experience. CCM piano faculty Kitty Cheung-Evans retells this 1838 work and prompts listeners to create their own stories in this participatory event. Movement titles such as “Dreaming” and “Of Distant Lands” inspire the imaginations of today’s youth and kindle affectionate sentiments of childhood for adults, connecting all listeners with the art of musical interpretation.

A Season of Stories Worth Sharing

In the 19th century, Concord was home to a literary revolution spawned by writers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Louisa May Alcott, and others. That legacy still thrives today, as local authors continue to inform, inspire, and stir the imagination. And during the holidays, there’s no better gift than a book — something thoughtful, lasting, and deeply personal.
